The Grapevine – Weatherford Int’l

OIlfield Grapevine

Weatherford International recently reported 1st Quarter 2013 earnings after adjustments that were generally in line with consensus estimates. The following day, the company’s stock price rose more than seven percent. Investors seemed relieved that no additional shoes dropped in the earnings release or conference call. The fact that such rise in stock price occurred on a report of no unexpected bad news says a lot about how Weatherford is currently viewed in the investor community.

Below are our thoughts on what we’ve read and heard from Weatherford recently, both positive and negative, as well as some updated data regarding the company’s customer satisfaction ratings and what they suggest for its new strategic tact: Continue reading “The Grapevine – Weatherford Int’l”

Top-rated Oil & Gas Industry Suppliers

EnergyPoint Header Image

With so much at stake in today’s oil and gas industry, customers are looking for both measured authenticity and established competence in their oilfield suppliers. The ability of the current group of top-rated suppliers to perform so consistently well in EnergyPoint’s customer satisfaction surveys is a testament to their commitment to, and talent for, providing a superlative customer experience.

Three of the recently finalized 2012 survey’s four main segment leaders are repeat winners — Helmerich & Payne in onshore drilling, Derrick Equipment in oilfield products, and Ensco in offshore drilling. Newpark Resources captured the top overall ranking in the oilfield services segment for the first time.

The Emotive Power of Rankings

Emotive Power

In the 1970s, J.D. Power began publishing his ratings and rankings of initial quality as reported by new car buyers. The publishing of these results, which were based on comprehensive independent surveys designed and conducted by his firm, were notable for two reasons.

First, he published the entire set of rankings (i.e., top to bottom, first to last). This was not a common practice in those days, and is still relatively rare today. Second, the rankings consistently showed that U.S. auto manufacturers (General Motors, Ford, Chrysler and American Motors) were putting out products that were markedly inferior in terms of quality and customer satisfaction to those of their foreign counterparts, particularly the Japanese. Can Weatherford Rise From The Ashes?

Weatherford

With the long-awaited restatement of its financials and resolution of tax issues expected to be completed shortly, Weatherford is looking to put one of the gloomiest chapters in its history behind it. And while the company faces challenges going forward, there’s evidence it could be closer than one might suspect to finding its natural place in the world.

An amalgam of acquired companies that provides everything from contract-drilling services to downhole completion tools, Weatherford has always possessed potential. Even its oilfield competitors acknowledge this. Yet, this potential has continually been arrested by an ongoing string of issues that, in whac-a-mole fashion, never seem to stop popping up. Contract Drillers Find Customer Centricity

Customer Centricity

For both onshore and offshore applications, EnergyPoint’s latest survey results indicate contract drillers are increasingly out to show customers they mean business. At the very least, land-drillers’ overall ratings remain on an upward bent, while offshore drillers’ ratings continue to be the highest of all the major oilfield segments that EnergyPoint tracks in its customer satisfaction surveys.

Helmerich & Payne’s ratings continue to lead onshore. In fact, the company remains the only land drillers to enjoy a very high overall designation in EnergyPoint’s independent customer satisfaction ratings system. Continue reading “Contract Drillers Find Customer Centricity”

Featured midstream image

A feature of EnergyPoint Research’s ratings is that they span numerous segments within the oil and gas industry. We currently publish ratings for contract drilling, oilfield services, oilfield products, and natural gas midstream services. Since our surveys are performed via a standardized process, the data enable fair comparison across segments. This reveals a balanced understanding of how segments and their participants are viewed by customers.

Below are the surveys conducted by EnergyPoint since 2003. The list is in descending order based on the average Total Satisfaction ratings of all suppliers rated in each respective survey: Continue reading “What’s Wrong with the Midstream?”
