MarkWest, Williams & Sunoco Logistics Garner Midstream Kudos

As customers in the hotly contested midstream services segment have demanded more reliable operations and deeper product-development capabilities from their suppliers, MarkWest Energy once again has emerged as best-in-class as it captured top honors in EnergyPoint Research’s 2013 Midstream Services Customer Satisfaction Survey.

The recently announced results cinches back-to-back customer satisfaction victories for MarkWest, which also took first-place overall in EnergyPoint’s midstream survey conducted in 2011. The biennial study, which dates back to 2006, is the leading independently conducted benchmark customer satisfaction study focusing on U.S. midstream service providers.

Williams and Sunoco Logistics captured the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the EnergyPoint Research survey.

First-place rankings in several key domestic regions led to MarkWest’s strong showing, with the company trumping the competition in the fast-growing Appalachian Basin / Marcellus and Ark-La-Tex region. The company also ranked first in the categories of onshore gas gathering, project development and operations.

Midstream services is one of five major oil- and gas-supply segments rated as part of EnergyPoint’s ongoing series of industry-wide benchmark customer satisfaction surveys. The 2013 study consists of over 800 in-depth evaluations by qualified professionals at more than 200 customers of domestic oil and gas midstream service suppliers.

Williams, which rated third overall in EnergyPoint Research’s 2011 survey, registered a first-place ranking in the area of systems and administration. The company also posted strong marks in the areas of personnel and corporate capabilities. Previously unranked Sunoco Logistics rounded out the survey’s top three, while also gabbing the No. 1 ranking in onshore crude gathering and in the Mid-continent region.

Customers evaluated midstream suppliers across various areas and attributes, including total satisfaction, pricing and contract terms, operations, project development, service and professionalism, personnel, systems and administration, and corporate capabilities. They also rated providers across producing regions and multiple natural gas and, for the first time, crude-oil service segments.

Relatively strong and stable oil prices, along with successful transference of
shale-related drilling and completion techniques, have resulted in significant activity in crude-producing regions of the U.S.  Many midstream suppliers previously focused on natural gas- and NGL-related services have effectively transitioned to providing crude-related services as well.

A total of 19 providers received the minimum number of evaluations needed to be included in this year’s rankings. Others rated in the survey, but not ranking first in any particular category, include Anadarko Midstream / WGP, Atlas Pipeline, Buckeye Partners, Crosstex, Enbridge, Enogex and Regency Energy Partners.
