Getting More of What’s Down There

No doubt the ability to maximize well potential is crucial to the oil and gas industry’s future. Companies must complete wells damage-free and seek new ways to enhance them in order to stand apart. Continued progress in well-completions is vital to the industry’s ability to develop its reserves.

This post examines the state of customer satisfaction across various completion-related products and services in our surveys. And generally speaking, survey respondents are pleased. In fact, the data show the category’s ratings have outperformed since 2006.

Within the segment, respondents rate casing and tubing installation highest of all sub-categories. Packers and artificial lift are next. Slightly lower marks go to hydraulic fracturing and sand control.

Intelligent controls and sensors is the only below-average product group. These scores are likely the result of unproven technologies pitched as “commercially viable” too soon.

Our results also suggest customers are more pleased with specialization within the category, and less with integration.

Lufkin Industries enjoys the highest marks of individual suppliers.  The company also continues to stand out as one of the overall highest-rated suppliers. The Frank’s companies (Frank’s Casing Crew and Frank’s International) also continue to enjoy healthy scores.

Larger players Baker Hughes, Halliburton, Schlumberger and Weatherford show consistency across respondent types. But they also garner more modest marks overall.  BJ Services’ weaker ratings reflect a decline in satisfaction among respondents at larger customers.

Ratings vs. Long-term Average of All Oilfield Products & Services

Although opinions are relatively upbeat for completion offerings, opportunities for improvement exist. For example, customers desire greater performance and consistency across most product and service lines. They want less “mixing-and-matching of whatever happens to be available” and more “fit-for-purpose” and “compatible-by-design” offerings.

To wit, purchasers desire greater access to technical resources. This includes better organized product manuals and online support, more accurate schematics and fewer overall mistakes. There’s also a need for more rigorous failure analysis and application of learned lessons.
